This post will describe what Sweden Social Web Camp (SSWC) is and why Sweden’s social media geeks meet on an island far far away without Internet connection.
Think of a small island far away from large cities or other signs of civizilation. Imagaine a life without cellular reception, only a few power supplies and most of the time no Internet connection. This is what hundreds of Swedish people have been looking forward all summer and finally this weekend 400 happy and enthusiastic Swedish web geeks have experienced this together.
Sweden Social Web Camp (#SSWC) is an unconferance for people interested in social media. Me (Mattias Tyrberg) and Fredrik Hörte joined SSWC to get feedback from developers regarding their need of text analysis such as tagging and related texts. So what is SSWC?
The history – SSWC 2009
400 social media geeks on an island outside of nowhere, how did this happened?
The (un)conference started by chance last year by Tomas Wennström & Kristin Heinonen. Tomas thought it would be fun to meet some guys in a country house and talk about social media. A couple of tweets later (and a lot of re-tweets) hundreds of people had shown interest in a meetup. Since Tomas didn’t have that a big country house he needed to find a bigger place and in August 2009 the first SSWC with 280 participants toke place on the island Tjärö.
SSWC 2010
SSWC 2009 was nothing but a success. Thanks to all swedish twitter users SSWC got a lot of media coverage and the interest for SSWC-2010 grew bigger.
Tjärö is a small island and the number of rooms for rent is limited. Those who are not as lucky as others need to spend the nights sleeping in tent. Despite the risk of being without proper shelter it only took 40 minutes before the (un)conference was sold out.
So why this hype of going to an island with almost no similarities to the world that we are so used to?
Maybe because we love the idea of being different? Maybe we want to live offline and talk to people in the real world? Maybe we are tired of tweeting about what we had for breakfast?
For us it was all about meeting inspiring people and getting feedback from people using our text analysis services. For others it might be just getting some fresh air and leave the stressful city. Anyhow SSWC 2010 was a success with a lot of good sessions and meetings.
After SSWC 2009 people said that the Swedish Twitter stream died during that weekend since those tweeting the most was trapped on an island without any Internet connection. This year was no different so in our next post we will share what happend during this weekend when Twitter in Sweden was dead.

This is a guest post by our API user Fores, a green and liberal research institute.
Saplo is a nonpartisan company and invites other organizations to use our API.
Think-Tank FORES together with Axess-TV and makthavare.se (makthavare.se) evaluated the statements from party leaders during the political week in Visby, Almedalsveckan, Sweden. In “Ideologisk After Speech”, broadcasted daily by Axess-TV, the statement were scrutinised from every aspect under the stewardship of FORES director Martin Ådahl.
The statement underwent an ideological evaluation (liberal or conservative, left or right) by a political philosopher, a fact check was made by makthavare.se, and economist Andreas Bergh made a calculation of the cost from the Speech. In addition to this, we used the Saplo API to analyse the speeches.
Politicians are often accused of being unclear, and being hard to separate from each other. They all sound the same, don´t they?
We were interested in finding out to which degree the party leaders sounded the same, but even more interested we were in finding out who they resemble. Is it true that Fredrik Reinfeldt (Prime Minister) sometimes sound more like a social democrat? In Almedalen, he apparently did, since his speech according to our analysis resembled Mona Sahlin‘s (party leader, social democrat) previous speeches more than his own. By the way it seems like Mona Sahlin is the one party leader who can be said being difficult to differ from the others. She finished top three in every analysis, meaning that every statement was pretty similar to the statements Sahlin usually deliver.
On the other hand it seems like Lars Ohly (party leader, left-wing party) is the odd man out, since every speech other than his own were furthest away from being similar to the left party leader’s.
In order to do the analysis, we collected a large amount of speeches from every party leader and created a context (using Saplo Context) for every leader. We than compared the Almedalen speech to each context.
Being aware that it is no exact science, it still added an extra spice to the After Speech and now we know – Fredrik Reinfeldt is more Mona Sahlin than Fredrik Reinfeldt. And Lars Ohly’s statements are the black sheep of Swedish political statements.

The past couple of weeks we have been working on an update for our Tags & Match Widget. The Widget is today primarily used by Swedish News Sites and display entity tags and related articles based on what the user is currently reading.
As many of you already know, Saplo’s main focus is to create an outstanding API for Text Analytics. What’s interesting with our new Widget is that we have built it entirely based on our API. This means that developers with access to our API could easily do the exact same thing.
Some of the news in Saplo Widget:
- Easy to use administration panel
- Blacklist
- Multiple User Accounts
- Edit Entity Tags
- Customizable Widget design
Important coming features:
- Add and edit related articles
- Statistics on Widget performance
Our metrics have shown that more then 1 (%) percentage of all visitors have clicked on a tag or related article presented by Saplo Widget. We are very excited to see if and how the placement of the Widget and the design of the Widget will affect the click-through-rate. When we know we will share the news.
We have been working on improvements for the Widget based on extremely valuable feedback from an amazing customer of ours. Big thanks and keep it coming!

Today we can proudly announce that Saplo has completed a $500.000 seed round for further development of a text analysis platform (API).
Founded in 2008, Saplo has grown on basis of sale incomes and research grants from the Swedish Government (i.e., VINNOVA). As sale efforts increased in 2010 we felt a strong need to bring in new competence in order to lift Saplo to the next level.
Among investors are several known names such as Professor Göran Grosskopf, Chairman of the Stichting INGKA Foundation (i.e, the parent company of the IKEA Group) and Martin Liljeberg, Founder of the SOVA chain of stores (Sweden’s largest chain of bed stores).
With new competence in primarily Sales, Finance, Economy and Management we are convinced that Saplo will progress faster and do so more efficiently.
We gladly accept feedback and requests regarding services offered by our API. For those of you who have ideas or concepts ready for development – please do not hesitate to sign up for API access. We will let you have access as soon as possible.

So the two last days Saplo has been attending the B0NN13R H4CKD4Y event that was held at Bonnier’s headquarter in Stockholm. It’s an events where developers are building all kinds of applications and/or concepts from idea to prototype in less then 24 hours. Mainly this event was for companies within the Bonnier group, although some external people where invited as well. We (Saplo) had open our API exclusively for this event and the teams. The services we provided was entity tagging with contextual entity categorization for persons, organisations and geo-names and a way to identify similar articles from a semantic point of view.
At a total there were 17 teams attending. Almost all of them used different APIs and solutions but some teams laborated with Saplo API. One of the teams built an application that tracks your geo location (from an iPhone, Android phone etc) and presents news articles that have taken place near this location. They are using the Saplo API to extract the places mentioned in the text and then polls out the geo-ip from Google (we will post a link when the application is online).

Today Sydsvenskan opened up for users to view and use Saplo tags on their site.
Saplo Tags automatically extracts entities such as persons, companies and geo-names (in this case in Swedish). This is eliminating manually work for editors. Please notice that this is a beta version and Saplo will focus a lot on improving the service in the upcoming months.
Read more about the service in Sydsvenskans blog (links in the end of the document).
